Al Qudra Lakes: a hidden desert oasis

Twenty minutes past the last villa community, the desert opens into a chain of man-made lakes. Here is why Dubai keeps coming back.

Al Qudra Lakes sit inside the Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve, a short drive beyond Arabian Ranches and Dubai Hills. There is no ticket and no gate, just cycling tracks, dunes and water where you would least expect it.

What is there

Love Lake (two joined heart-shaped lakes, best seen from the air), the wider Al Qudra chain, and more than 175 bird species including flamingos in the cooler months. The 86 km Al Qudra cycle track loops through the whole reserve.

How it shapes nearby living

For buyers in the southern villa communities, Al Qudra is the weekend the brochure promises: camping, cycling and sunrise picnics, all inside city limits. It is part of why the Ranches, Dubai Hills and Dubai South keep their appeal for families.

Practical notes

  • Go early morning or near sunset to avoid the heat.
  • Bring your own water; there are no shops inside the reserve.
  • It is a protected area, so stick to marked tracks and leave no trace.
